Maasai Women's Projects
Natopiwo works in close collaboration with the women and men of Monduli Juu to support women’s and girls’ education, economic empowerment, and safety. As a grassroots, locally-led organization, we are uniquely positioned to understand and collaboratively respond to issues of gender in Monduli Juu.
We work with both women and men to ensure girls have access to school and women have access to basic resources that allow their families to thrive. From the Natopiwo preschool to our environmental projects, Maasai women are an integral component of all of our work and team.
We are dedicated to centering women and girls in our ongoing and future projects and processes, particularly as we expand our work to address environmental infrastructure challenges such as water and soil erosion.
When the women of Monduli Juu expressed an interest in learning to write and read to support their economic wellbeing and help their school-aged children with their homework, Natopiwo launched a women’s literacy and skills program. Currently meeting three times, the program provides three weekly sessions alternating between literacy, numeracy and sewing to approximately thirty women. This project is an example of Natopiwo’s responsiveness to local needs.
We believe education is one avenue through which people open up possibilities for their futures, achieve economic empowerment, and gain understandings of their rights.
